Travel with He Yang Series – Kamakura: Return to Your High School Days

What comes to mind when you think of Kamakura? Is it the anime from your childhood, the historical shift from martial to literary culture, or the leisurely slow-paced life?

NO.1 First Stop

For the first destination of the “Travel with He Yang” series, we chose a day trip to Kamakura.

The reason for choosing Kamakura is not only because it holds many childhood memories and dreams of studying in Japan for our students, but also because the teachers want to let the students seize the last bit of spring, go outside, and feel the warmth of the spring breeze and the refreshing sea air.

NO.2 Enoshima

At 8:00 AM, we departed from Shinjuku, took a direct train to Fujisawa Station, and then transferred to the Enoden train to our first stop: Enoshima.

We were extraordinarily lucky that day, as the outline of Mount Fuji was clearly visible in the distance, picturesque and poetic. The students were deeply moved by the magnificent view, the connection between the mountains and the sea, as if they had entered a dreamlike world.

NO.3 Sharing

In Enoshima, the must-try delicacy is the octopus rice cracker, which is larger than your face and greatly surprised the students. Everyone shared the delicious snack, filling the air with laughter and joy. The teachers joined the students in tasting the food, sharing their feelings, and strengthening the bond between them.

Afterwards, we headed directly to Kamakura Station, enjoyed the local specialty tonkatsu, and then took a bus to Hokokuji Temple. We walked through the serene bamboo grove, feeling at one with nature. The tranquility and peace of the bamboo grove made it seem like we had entered another world, purifying and relaxing our minds. The students, led by the teachers, quietly appreciated the beauty of the bamboo grove and engaged in a dialogue with their hearts.

We also tasted the world’s number one ranked pancakes at Bills. Watching the sun gradually approach the coastline, the sky tinted with a faint orange, the students chased the sunset together and arrived at the place where many dreams of studying in Japan begin—Kamakura High School Front.

As the train approached, it felt like we were transported into a manga, seeing the fleeting moment of Sakuragi and Haruko passing by. Everyone was immersed in this dreamy scene. The teachers and students took photos together, capturing this beautiful moment. As the day came to an end, we watched the sea and the beautiful sunset. We hope that the students’ journey of studying in Japan will be even more fulfilling and wonderful. With He Yang, continue to explore more beauty and surprises.
