Exploring the Birthplace of Ultraman with Wayo Japanese Language School: A Trip to Soshigaya-Okura

On December 23, 2024, we began the countdown to the end of the year with an exciting cultural trip. Students and teachers from Wayo Japanese Language School visited Soshigaya-Okura Station on the Odakyu Line, embarking on a journey full of fun and cultural insights. The theme of this activity was “Exploring the Birthplace of Ultraman,” where we delved into the origins of the iconic hero while deepening our understanding of Japanese pop culture.

A Fun Adventure Along the Odakyu Line

Wayo Japanese Language School is located along the Odakyu Line, a convenient transit route connecting numerous fascinating spots. To make the most of this, the school organizes activities that allow students to explore and experience the culture and attractions around them in a relaxed and enjoyable way.

Walking the Ultraman Street: Immersing in Hero Culture

Upon arriving at Soshigaya-Okura, our first stop was the famous “Ultraman Street.” This themed street is dedicated to the Ultraman series, with statues and murals evoking nostalgic memories. Students enthusiastically snapped photos, mimicked Ultraman’s classic poses, and immersed themselves in the world of tokusatsu heroes. The shops along the street also featured Ultraman-themed decorations and products, brimming with creativity and charm.

A Lunchtime Experience at the Ultraman Café

For lunch, we visited the popular Ultraman Café in the area. Every dish on the menu was specially designed with the Ultraman theme, such as “Ultraman Curry” and “Monster Desserts.” These meals were not only delicious but also playful and creative. As students enjoyed their meals, they shared childhood stories about Ultraman, filling the café with laughter and warm conversations.

Diverse Activities Along the Odakyu Line

Beyond Soshigaya-Okura, the school frequently organizes trips to other exciting destinations along the Odakyu Line. Examples include:

  • Shimokitazawa: The school’s home base, a trendy hub for young people, perfect for shopping and exploring unique cafes.
  • Gotokuji Temple: Known as the birthplace of the “lucky cat,” this temple is filled with thousands of beckoning cat figurines symbolizing good fortune and happiness.
  • Fujiko F. Fujio Museum: Also known as the Doraemon Museum, this museum showcases the original works, creative process, and precious materials related to Fujiko F. Fujio, the creator of Doraemon.
  • Shin-Yurigaoka: A serene yet modern area, ideal for art lovers and those seeking a connection with nature.
